Until recently, it was hard find any hemp clothing other than the usual 70’s-style maxi dresses, tie-die t-shirts, hippie-friendly hoodies and yoga wear. Fortunately, the increased demand for organic, chemical-free clothing has emboldened a few designers to incorporate hemp into some of their new ready-to-wear collections.
We’re also beginning to see the emergence of hemp silk blends as a textile alternative in bespoke haute couture. While not widely publicized, hemp high fashion has made step-and-repeat appearances at box office premieres, in the catwalks of Fashion Week and on the red carpets of the Academy Awards – Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Espy and Tony – worn by film, music and trend-setting fashion icons.
Despite the growing demand for hemp and glowing endorsements of its high-profile buyers, finding high-fashion hemp takes some digging. When there’s a will, there’s a way. We set out on a new quest to locate the pioneering designers behind the haute hemp movement dressing the fashionable elite in cannabis couture. Here are just a few of our favorites.
